The White Mountain National Forest fire and fuels program offers a moderately complex, fast-paced, and diverse workload. The White Mountain NF is home to a growing fuels program and a steadily increasing fire workload. We typically see periods of rain throughout the year, so opportunities exist for off-unit assignments and ample personal time to pursue a work-life balance. The position is established on a Forest Service Unit. The incumbent serves as a Dispatch Center Manager which is a career ladder position at the GW-0301-09/11 level, which reports to the Forest Fire Management Officer (FFMO).

The Center Manager is responsible for running the Northeastern Interagency Dispatch Center (NECC).

• The incumbent is responsible for coordinating emergency communications and assists with the overall execution of activities of a dispatch center. Coordinates with federal, state, and local agencies through the national dispatch system to ensure rapid, focused, and cost-effective responses to wildland fires and other incidents. Applies administrative and technical methods, practices, and procedures of fire suppression dispatching, as well as agency policies and programs, to execute complete conventional projects or oversee day-to-day operations.
• Assists aviation planning efforts. Coordinates availability of helicopters and aircraft with federal, state, local, and other cooperating agencies. Develops plans to deal with aircraft incidents and accidents. Oversees search and rescue procedures for overdue or missing aircraft.
• Recommends changes to personnel levels to meet changes in budgeted funds, ceiling, or workload. Periodically reviews the Center's overall work performance to ensure safe compliance of programs with plans, schedules, and standards. Ensures that all dispatch center personnel are properly trained on Dispatch Center computer systems and programs.
• Supervises employees performing dispatch work at various grade levels. Provides administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the dispatch center.
• Assists with the administration of Forest Casual Hire program which may include processing time and travel.
• Those who are interested must meet the selective placement factors and additional required training which are EDSD-Expanded Dispatch Support Dispatcher (currency not required) and completion of S-491-Intermediate National Fire Danger Rating System. This is a covered secondary position description under the provisions of 5USC 8336 (c) and 8412 (d). Ninety (90) days of experience as a primary/rigorous wildland firefighter or equivalent experience outside federal employment as a basic qualification requirement for this position. This position is matched to the following position which is approved for secondary firefighter coverage by USDA under FERS and CSRS on June 28, 2005; E1 (AFM030).
