About the NFFPC: Organization
The NFFPC 'Compact' was approved by the United States Congress through the
passage of legislation and its formation confirmed by several State Legislatures.
The 'Compact' area is comprised of 7 states, 3 provinces and the New England National
Forests. The governing body of the Compact is the Northeastern Forest
Fire Protection Commission.
To form the Commission, each state is represented by three (3) commissioners; the state forester, a state legislator and a governor's representative. Each Canadian province also designates three (3) commissioners. An Executive Committee, consisting of a chairman, vice chairman, past chairman and a professional executive director, provides for Compact administration and coordination on behalf of the Commissioners.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service also provides assistance and coordination.
The NFFPC has formed a members 'Operations Committee' to recommend practices and procedures associated with resource, technology and information sharing. In order to assist with development or operational practices and procedures and facilitate resource sharing, five (5) working teams have been formed:
